Meet The Governors

The Governors at Brandling work together to support and oversee the development of our school and children. As stated in the DfE’s Governance Handbook, the responsibilities of the governing body are:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent

Mr E Bartley

Chair of Governors

I'm Ed Bartley,  Chair of Governors, and a number of you will have seen me in and around school. I regularly attend meetings and enjoy visits to classrooms and attending assemblies and other events.   I'm retired now but my working background was as an English teacher across schools in the region and lastly as a Head Teacher in Gateshead.   So I have a pretty good understanding of how schools work, which I hope helps me make a contribution to your 'outstanding' school.

I'm married and have two grown up children so I have an understanding of what it is to be a parent and of the anxieties and aspirations you have for your children.   I enjoy family life and my interests outside of education are pretty much the same as everyone else - watching TV, shopping, meals out, day trips and holidays, and unfortunately football, but I blame my dad for that.   I also enjoy going to concerts, most recent Jeff Lynne's ELO at the Arena and visits to the theatre, most recent Jersey Boys.

If you see me around the school please have a word, it's always nice to speak to parents and families

Mrs M Walton

Co-opted governor

My name is Margaret Walton   and I have three children, two daughters and a son.   All my children and grandchildren have attended Brandling Primary School.  I have been a governor for the past 13 years and I have enjoyed being involved in the whole life of the school.

I have been a lunchtime supervisor for 16 years and a cleaner for the past 5 years.  I believe that I have a good understanding of how the school works.

I know how important it is for parents and school staff to work in partnership for the best outcomes for all children.  I am involved in projects in the wider community.

Mrs L Johnston

Staff governor

My name is Lesley Johnston, I am very proud to be the School Business Manager at Brandling Primary School and have been here since 2006. I have been an active staff governor now since 2010 and I chair the Health & Safety committee. The best part of being a governor and a member of the Senior Leadership Team is being able to make a positive difference to the lives of all the children and their families at Brandling.

I am originally from York but have lived in South Tyneside since 1992 with my husband and 2 daughters, Sophie age 18 and Lucy age 12.

Miss K Graham

Parent Governor

My name is Kerry Graham and I have a daughter who is currently in Year 4 at Brandling.

I love being involved within the school community and currently volunteer at breakfast club. Being a governor gives me a better understanding as a parent of the learning environment and I believe it is important to be able to make a positive contribution wherever I can.

Mr O Blessing

Reverend Tom Worsley

Co-opted Governor

My name is Tom Worsley and I have been a governor since November 2018.

I was born and raised in Gateshead, my working background includes a variety of roles from BT engineer, Brewery Admin and QE Hospital Admin.  I was ordained in 2012 and licensed as Part Time Priest in Charge of Christ Church Felling in 2016 after being a member of the congregation for many years.

I really enjoy the times that the children come into church for their Easter, Harvest and Christmas services and when I am able to visit for school assemblies and shows.  It is great to be part of a group working together for the children and the community.

In addition to my role as a governor, I am also involved with Friends of Felling Park, Felling Food Network and Chaplain to Trinity Square.  In my spare time I enjoy reading and gardening.
